Why do people act differently in groups then when by themselves? Is there truth to the idea of the “madness of crowds”? Is Mass Formation Psychosis a real experience? And if so, what are the operative mechanics behind it? Since the Classical Period to the present, scholars, rulers, priest class, and leaders of all stripes have sought to understand how to influence – even control – the mass of human beings within their spheres of influence. Some have believed that various occult forces, those of magic, can be invoked to assist – Bruno appears to hint at it and paid the price – more recently others look to a mysterious ‘Collective Unconscious’ and psycho-biological drives as the medium of ‘mass management.’
Regardless, both schools of thought AND practice have a great deal to teach us about past, current, and predicting future events as we examine the power of symbols, rituals, mass media, crises creation and management, manipulation of idealism, and the dualling heads of Hope and Fear in influencing and controlling large groups of people. Some scriptures say, “The gods are scoundrels!” and others that “The gods come through for us with effort.” Which is it? Or maybe both. If so, it is best to know the rules by which the gods and humans in ‘the know’ play this cosmic game of life so we can play on equal terms – and win the prize of ultimate freedom.
