I was recently asked about a conversation I had several years ago – and a published essay that resulted from it – about ‘The Masters.’ Yes, those masters, the great adepts who are said to watch over humanity. As is often pointed out, and frequently ignored, our entire relationship with these beacons of consciousness is entirely impersonal. That is, they really don’t care about you or anyone else – at least not as an individual. Now this is really very simple to understand: if they did, they would. That is, if they cared about anyone of us as individuals then they would assist us as individuals with our very individual problems, but they don’t. What they do care about is us as individuals progressing on the Path, and within that very framework, the value we bring to assisting others on their ‘Path” as well.
In that regards, “the gods help those who help themselves” or “God helps god.” They listen when we call, they sometimes even come when we ask. But it is all up to us to make the call, and sometimes very frequently over a longer period of time than we would like, to show we really mean it. We must demonstrate our sincerity just as we would with anyone else of whom we are asking some form of special assistance.
But make no mistake, these adepts – like all conscious beings, even invisible ones – have an agenda of their own.
Several days ago I posted a comment Jean Dubuis made about the Prophecies of Nostradamus. In the essay Dubuis states that the ‘prophecies’ are not so much predictions of what will happen, but rather mental creations designed to put some bumpers or safety rails on human activity. A sort of ‘ring pass not’ in the psychic dimensions. What should be very clear about this, even frightening, is that these same adepts were working from the perspective of “level 6 and level 5” as Dubuis put it, or Tiphareth and Geburah. This path, sometime attributed to the Tarot card “Justice” is about equilibrium. That is, keeping things from going too far out of balance. That does not mean they cannot go to an extreme, only that if they do, they were be brought back to equilibrium by extreme measures. That is how balance and counter-balance work. Eat right, exercise, and get some rest and you will be healthy. Avoid one or all of these three requirements and at some point illness will set in and if ignored, strong measures will be needed to restore health – or at least limit the damage being done. Or on the collective level, as one close friend said to me when he asked his teaching at what point will the “cosmic masters” intervene in human affairs he was told, “They will let it go as far as it must, and if that means 95% of the population is destroyed, then and only then will they stop it from going further.” Hardly the warm and fuzzy he was looking for and not exactly reassuring. Let history be our guide, and the history of the 20th century in particular.
So, we can see that in terms of prophecies such as those mentioned above it is very simple: if you want to reincarnate in a world being rebuilt from the bottom up then do nothing or the bare minimum. If you want to reincarnate in a world that offers you the potential for completing your journey, of liberation so to speak, then it is up to you to build it.
Or as Eliphas Levis wrote:
“The Great Work is, before all things, the creation of man by himself, that is to say, the full and entire conquest of his faculties and his future; it is especially the perfect emancipation of his will assuring…full power over the Universal Magical Agent. This Agent, disguised by the ancient philosophers under the name of the First Matter, determines the form of modifiable substances and we can really arrive by means of it at metallic transmutation, and the Universal Medicine. This is not a hypothesis. It is a scientific fact already established, and rigorously demonstrable.”
It isn’t rocket science. Karma can be mysterious if we are not paying attention, but if we are, then it is pretty obvious most of the time.
But back to the great Unknown Superiors that watch over the solar system and our place in it.
If you wish to get their attention and their help, then make yourself useful to them, and that means, useful to others down here on the material dimension. The value that you bring is the only thing they care about, and that “value” be it on a relative or absolute level does not always match our very limited and naive middle-class Protestant notions of ‘goodness’ and what is ‘right.’ It has a bigger picture in mind, and if that means the United States of America gets the atomic bomb first and that means 200,000 horrific casualties and the war ends, then so be it, as that also means the alternatives were far worse. This level of “tough love” is nearly impossible to grasp on the human level except by those who have had to make serious life and death decisions. As a result, it is easy to either ignore the point being made or to over simplify it and treat the people involved in simplistic and cartoonish manner, thereby avoiding the complexity of life – the complexities of karma.
Over the next few weeks we will be presenting a series of essays on this topic, and make no mistake about it – these are not for informational purposes or intellectual consideration but to move you to action. Actions that will benefit you in the long run as well as others as we move into the future and address its challenges and opportunities.
This is not meant to frighten you, but instead to provide an adult view of the Path, or as Jesus said, “To them I give milk, but to you strong meat.” The purpose of the Institute for Hermetic Studies is to provide useful esoteric training. That training is not an end in itself, but is to help each of you to realize that you are “an adept in training” a future “avatar” if you will. This is the view we wish you to adopt so that it may be realized, and with that realization, your spiritual aspirations be fulfilled. To do that however, you need to know what the views and actions of maturity are, and how to integrate them into your life: for your benefit and the benefit of others.
We will continue this conversation next week. Until then, we suggest you start your day as well as meditation or ritual sessions with an acknowledgment to those who have tread the path before you and made it easier for you to walk it now. To place yourself at the service of the adepti and to both wish as well as act for the benefit of others first and yourself second – and most importantly, to do it from the perspective of Wisdom. That is, to wish that everyone have what they need on a relative level: food, clothing, education, teachings, money, etc. and from that can proceed on the spiritual path and realize Illumination, or the absolute level. Then, do something to make this aspiration happen. Everyday do something to make it happen. Do not simply leave it as a wish or a nice idea. Find an action, no matter how large or small, to make it a reality.
